… and 25. Since 2001, the frenetic story of Primavera Sound has been progressing relentlessly, minute by minute, in step with the evolution of contemporary music, but we can allow ourselves to pause, if only for a moment, before beginning to imagine what the festival’s 25th edition will be like. Every aspect of the unique and exciting line-up for Primavera Sound Barcelona 2027, recently unveiled in a video directed by Guillem Cruells, produced by Vampire Films and post-produced by VETA, in collaboration with master stonemasons Barbany, celebrates a legacy that has been painstakingly crafted over a quarter of a century. But what do we mean when we talk about legacy? Of course, we’re talking about the countless extraordinary—and sometimes almost unbelievable—musical moments Barcelona has experienced over the course of the festival. About many of the city’s most significant cultural events so far this century. But above all, we’re talking about the entire semantic landscape generated in real time across the 24 editions held to date: as in any close and enduring relationship, Primavera Sound and its audience communicate with one another in a language of their own, as illustrated by the series of posts that have made up a countdown on the official Instagram profile over the past few weeks.

Legacy is that intimate and partly made-up language: an endless array of rules, references, subtexts and private jokes that can only truly be understood within their own context. There are countless things that mean different things inside and outside Primavera Sound. There are even things that cease to mean what they used to mean when they come into contact with Primavera Sound. All of this makes up an inimitable imaginary. A universe that cannot be replicated and that will continue to evolve from 2nd to 6th June, around this line-up of 151 artists and bands who are undoubtedly part ofthe Primavera lexicon. The fact that they are all interconnected from today onwards, with their sights set on the festival’s 25th edition, also takes on its own meaning.

YEAR I, YEAR XXV. The logo from the festival’s first edition features prominently on the Primavera Sound Barcelona 2027 poster, although in fact it really doesn’t need to be present on either for the festival’s identity to be instantly recognisable. Looking back, that first year—a single-day event with just a dozen acts—plotted a course in which there are no shortcuts: Primavera Sound can only be reached through Primavera Sound itself.

A journey that next year will lead us to Doechii, supernova of the American rap scene who, propelled by her mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal and her iconic live performances, has pushed the boundaries of the genre to become a versatile artist who will be making her debut in Spain; Phoebe Bridgers, the singer-songwriter of a whole generation, even more so following the triumphant return marked by Lost Weekend, her long-awaited third album; the Irish heroes Fontaines D.C., absolutely unstoppable on the eve of Dopamine Chamber, their new album, to culminate their meteoric rise at Primavera Sound; Massive Attack, ready to cement their commitment to the avantgarde by making their (long-awaited!) festival debut; Turnstile, who areso voracious that, luckily, they can never get enough; The Chemical Brothers, legends of dance music whose story will meet that of Primavera Sound for the first time; Robyn, your favourite pop star’s favourite pop star; the chameleonic FKA twigs, ready to present an all-new show; Bad Gyal, from Barcelona to the world with her collection of anthems in her suitcase; and Hayley Williams, a leading figure in female-led rock who shines in a lineup packed with women after more than two decades of fighting to ensure that something like this isn’t just a pipe dream. At least at Primavera Sound it isn’t: Women are undeniably leading the way in a line-up where the gender breakdown is once again balanced.

And, this 25th edition at the Parc del Forum will also bring together Lola Young, with the echo of her smash hit Messy still echoing in our ears, Skrillex and the Australian artist Ninajirachi in a deeply evocative b2b set to close the festival, indie icons Pavement; the Slovakian ADÉLA, who has emerged as the pop sensation of the year; the professional partiers Prospa, still basking in the afterglow of their success following the release of the summer hit Free Your Mind, Caroline Polachek, who continues to add new dimensions to her fascinating persona; that six-headed monster known as King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Bleachers fronted by the genius Jack Antonoff, the timeless electronic music duo Underworld, the enigmatic British rapper EsDeeKid, and ANOHNI with her ability to bring beauty and pain together – on this occasion channelled into a special set comprising songs by her friend and collaborator Lou Reed.

EVERY COLOUR. Even the poster’s extensive colour scheme is not enough to capture the infinite Pantone spectrum of musical tones into which Primavera Sound Barcelona 2027 can be broken down. Where to start? For example, with all the colours of contemporary pop that fit within the scope formed by Kim Petras, Tinashe, Shygirl, Theodora and Hearts2Hearts. More? Converge, Full of Hell, Castle Rat and Prostitute showcase the full range of the most extreme rock. Still want more? BICEP, Joy Orbison, Ibrahim Alfa Jnr and John Talabot help us understand all the nuances that club music encompasses today.

Meanwhile, the unusual appearance at the age of 81 of Vashti Bunyan – a cult vocalist who has barely given a dozen performances in the last decade – will provide the perfect framework to encompass diverse approaches to singer-songwriting, from the chamber pop icon Weyes Blood to Julien Baker, who is resuming her solo career after a hiatus of almost five years, via Rebe, Dove Ellis, Guillem Gisbert and the ever-unique Bonnie “Prince” Billy, another artist who rarely performs at major festivals… unless it’s Primavera Sound. After over thirty years of forging his own take on the American tradition, he will be visiting the Parc del Fòrum for the first time.

JOIN THE DOTS. As is always the case at Primavera Sound, this list of artists and bands implicitly contains a pattern that defines not only the multifaceted character of the festival but also that of its audience. Jumping from one name to another, you may end up connecting dots that seemed to be a million miles apart: after all, only here can Metronomy’s synth-pop delicacies coexist with Warning’s monolithic doom metal, Malibu’s deconstructed ambient and JT’s proudly Southern hip-hop, the unexpected flamenco romance between Carlos de Jacoba & Ciutat and the electronic mantras of Headache, the polyrhythmic rock of Don Caballero and the urban challenge of Metrika, the industrial dance music of Boy Harsher and the theatrical pop of Haute & Freddy.

Other connections are more direct, though it is no less exciting to see how they come to life. At Primavera Sound Barcelona 2027, you’ll be able to follow both that vibrant ecosystem of digital post-pop championed by Arca, underscores, Snow Strippers and AKRIILA, as well as the sounds that basically shaped the festival’s formative years, embodied by the indomitable Dinosaur Jr., the revitalised DIIV, the Argentine troubadour Santiago Motorizado, Gilla Band that seems guided by the spirit of Mark E. Smith, and three bands set to become new favourites of the Primavera community: Westside Cowboy, @ and Twisted Teens. Their presence, combined with that of other emerging acts such as Sophia Stel, ear and pablopablo, reinforces Primavera Sound’s status as a stage where the future happens.

And when it comes to sounds which are closely linked to the festival’s history, no one beats Bradford Cox, one of the artists who has performed at Primavera Sound more times than anyone else, whether leading Deerhunter or under his alias Atlas Sound. After seven long years of having all but disappeared from the public eye, Cox will revisit the psych-folk repertoire of Atlas Sound to join the long list of surprise appearances at the Parc del Fòrum.

ITS OWN LANGUAGE(S). After a quarter of a century, Primavera Sound’s distinctive language is in fact the sum of many unique micro-languages. As if paying homage to its own history, the festival will once again feature a line-up of dozens of musical projects that sound like nothing else, such as the eccentric singer-songwriter Juana Molina, the crazy electro-punk band Lip Critic, the master of minimalism, Tirzah, and Jesu, one of the many sonic incarnations of the experimental luminary Justin Broadrick.

These are artists and bands that are so peculiar that they seem to exist in a dimension of their own, governed by their own rules and circumstances. The Canadians Angine de Poitrine, who became the most famous math-rock band in history thanks to a spectacular twist of fate on the internet. Producer Pole, a leading figure in German electronic music, who will be performing his 1 2 3 trilogy – key to understanding the development of dub techno. mori and TRISTÁN!, the two most unconventional members of the rusia-idk collective. The hyperactive duo B0YG1RL, a rare collision of hedonism and avant-garde that provides the soundtrack for the festival’s promotional video. Mark Fell & RP Boo – a veteran of abstract techno and the father of footwork, respectively – united in a new show. The fact that everyone sees Primavera Sound as the space where these norms and conditions can be reimagined is the result of 24 editions spent diligently leaving no stone unturned.

151… AND MORE. The Primavera lexicon also means knowing that, although this lineup is already an inexhaustible source of musical inspiration, there is still a lot to be revealed about what next year’s festival will bring. Primavera Sound Barcelona 2027 will hold its main days from 3rd to 5th June, without including the free opening day on Wednesday 2nd and the closing electronic party, Primavera Bits, on Sunday 6th, headlined by three electronic pioneers; Richie Hawtin, Four Tet and Dixon, the event marks the first time the trio will come together anywhere in the world for an eight-hour journey of alternating sets. The Parc del Fòrum will host all this activity as the festival’s epicentre, but several spaces and venues around Barcelona will host a complementary programme – yet to be revealed – that will make the 25th edition of Primavera Sound a full week of music. In addition, Primavera Pro, Primavera Sound’s meeting point for industry professionals, will hold its 18th edition from 2nd to 5th June, debuting its new venue at the DHub with a programme of conferences and showcases to be announced shortly.

Primavera Sound Barcelona 2027 is supported by Estrella Damm, Revolut and CUPRA as key strategic partners. Their support makes it possible to continue improving the festival, in which we believe so strongly – both in terms of music and in everything that surrounds it. They are joined by the essential collaboration of Levi’s, Schwarzkopf, Aperol, zalando, Vueling and azulmarino as well as Fever as the official ticketing platform. Many thanks to everyone for your faith in Primavera Sound.
